May 21st - I did some literature search in order to write the Reflection Essay II and found many governmental and non-governmental organizations that regularize pediatric medical devices before they become available for users and also during the period that these equipment are being used to ensure the public safety. Two of the main organizations I found were the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). I also found the growth guideline tables used by physicians on the CDC website. There is also a free CDC Growth Chart Training developed by the CDC and HRSA's Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) for healthcare professionals. To view click here.

The online training offered by the CDC states that the child is measured standing with heels, buttocks, shoulders and head touching a flat upright surface. The child is asked to inhale deeply and to stand fully erect without altering the position of the heels and look straight ahead. The measurements taken should agree within a quarter inch. While we believe we can create a device that will provide accurate measurement of the distance between the child’s head and the ground we cannot assure that the child’s posture will be the recommended position by the CDC which can cause discrepancies in the measurements. At this time, we have not been able to find a solution to this issue and we are fully aware of our time constraints. With our limited time we hope to get a complete function unit to our client until the end of this quarter and we hope that another team of students who will take this course in the future can improve on our design.

Here are the links for the tables:

Reflection: I was somewhat disconnected from the group this week because of my midterms. Therefore I tried to compensate by writing a large portion of the Reflection Essay II.
